Academic Policy Board Online Petition

The academic structure and supporting policies are designed by the Stern faculty to ensure the academic integrity of the MBA program.  The school recognizes that, on occasion, a student may experience extenuating or unusual circumstances that may warrant an exception to one of the school's policies.  If you have an unusual or extenuating situation that you feel may warrant a special exception to the academic policies of the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, you may submit a petition to the Academic Policy Board.  The Board is comprised of faculty, deans and senior administrators.  The Board will meet to review your request and render a decision through the Academic Policy Board Online Petition site.

To submit your written petition to the Academic Policy Board, log-in to the Academic Policy Board Online Petition site with your Stern NetID and password on the right of this page.  The Academic Policy Board meets weekly to review petitions and responds to all petitions in a timely manner.

Please be advised that board decisions are final and subsequent petitions to the same regard will not be reviewed unless new, compelling information is provided.  An appeal of the board's decision may be made to the Senior Associate Dean, MBA and Graduate Programs.

Issues not appropriate for the Academic Policy Board

Grading and instructor issues are not within the purview of the Academic Policy Board.

If you have a concern with a particular course and/or a grade, your first step is to address this with the instructor of that course.  If the issue is not resolved, you may next raise the issue to the chairperson of the academic department.

Grade reviews can involve any aspect of the student's submitted work in the class.  Reviews may result in a higher grade, a lower grade or no changes made to the grade.

Specializations are not within the purview of the Academic Policy Board.

For each specialization, a committee of faculty members oversees the specialization.  Once a year, the committee reviews and updates the specialization and the elective courses that count toward the specialization.  Deciding which courses count toward a specialization is a judgment call.  Many courses will be of interest to a student pursuing a specialization; only those courses that are sufficiently focused on the theory, methods, and knowhow central to the specialization count toward the specialization.

Between annual reviews, you may request to add a course to a specialization by sending a message to MBASpecRequest@stern.nyu.edu; the message should include the course, the course syllabus, the specialization, and the basis for requesting that the course count toward the specialization.
