Jay Kranzler
The Business of Biotechnology: Structure and Strategy
MGMT-GB.2312
Samantha Seiden
Langone, MBA Fulltime, PhD (Stern)
$1800
The Business of Biotechnology course is meant to build upon the core strategy course applied to the Life Sciences industry, primarily through the lens of small entrepreneurial “biotech” companies. By way of format, the class will use the case method to allow students to adopt the role of senior management at a life sciences enterprise, presenting them with the opportunity to analyze situations, identify issues, develop and evaluate options, make decisions, and plan implementation. The cases cover the full range of strategic as well as operational issues faced by biotech companies across functional areas including discovery, development, manufacturing, and sales and marketing, as well as other key factors for success such as, intellectual property, regulatory (i.e. FDA), pricing, financing (from both the company and investor perspective), and partnering (the last of which is covered in a 2 session simulated negotiation among the students). While most of the cases will involve companies developing drugs, there will be a few sessions covering medical device and diagnostics manufacturers. Beyond the one or more cases covered in each session, there will be an invited guest each week who will describe their own first-hand experience relative to the topic under discussion. Given the case method format, the class is intended to be very interactive, and class participation is 40% of the grade. The rest of the grade is based on a short paper describing and analyzing a key strategic issue at a company of each student’s choosing. While the course was developed for Stern by Jay D Kranzler, MD, PhD, a longstanding industry CEO and Advisor, several years ago, the course was adapted and taught at the Medical School since, attracting graduate and post-graduate students as well as medical faculty. In its return to Stern, the course has been revised significantly to appeal to students with either business or scientific backgrounds. As Dr. Kranzler is an Adjunct Professor at Stern, a key role of the teaching fellow is to help Dr. Kranzler (in coordination with a teaching assistant from the Medical School) as a Stern interface to support in the set-up as well as ongoing administration of the course. Examples of the kind of support required will be the invitation and scheduling of weekly guest lecturers, as well as checking attendance, and administering the class website - including communicating information to the class as needed, uploading readings and other materials. In addition, the student will help record the classroom participation of each student, by both frequency and quality of engagement, to contribute to the class participation component of the final grade. The teaching fellow will also support Dr. Kranzler in the review of certain classroom assignments which involve building spreadsheets to address issues raised in the case discussions. The ideal candidate will have strong business skills, with education, experience, or interest in life sciences or engineering a plus. The class is from 6-9pm every Tuesday, so the teaching fellow needs to be able to attend all the classes, as well as to commit to an average of 2 hours per week of administrative support, for a total commitment of roughly 5 hours/week. Interested students should email Professor Jay Kranzler at jay@jaykranzler.com to apply.
